I was born in Newcastle and now live at Royal Quays. I have always felt a strong attraction to the River Tyne, the sea and the coast. I sailed dinghies on the Tyne estuary for 30 years. My study of family history has thrown up several ancestors who were in the merchant navy or worked on the river making sails or ropes. One of my earliest discovered relatives was a boat builder who in later years owned a grocers’ shop on the quayside at North Shields. My maternal aunt served in the WRENS during the war.
After my father died aged 100, we discovered amongst his piles of photographic paraphernalia many quality glass slide photographs of the family taken by his father. These have proved valuable source material as well as showing fascinating insight into relatives whom I knew only as old people or never met.
I enjoyed art at school, but apart from amusing my children with sketches did little artwork until I retired. After encouragement from my mother I started with watercolours but now prefer the immediacy and bold colours of pastels and acrylics.
